The 1997 Formula 1 season consisted of 17 races, it started Mar. 9th with the Australian Grand Prix at the Albert Park Melbourne Street Circuit. The season ended October 26th with the European Grand Prix at the Circuito Permanente de Jerez, in Jerez Spain. Jacques Villeneuve won his only championship. He is the most recent North American driver to win an F1 championship, he is from Canada. Michael Schumacher would have finished second in the Championship just 3 points back, but because he intentionally tried to wreck Villeneuve in the last race, he was disqualified for the season. This is the last time that the Williams team won a drivers, and Constructors championship.
